Ask who you know! This was one of the best pieces of business advice I received early on.
This week, our ‘who we know’ session featured the incredibly talented and knowledgeable Zoe McCarthy, a lecturer in Fashion and Beauty & Media at Solent University. What a fabulous visit it was!
Zoe joined us in the studio to share valuable tips, insights, and industry knowledge with Mai, our Year 10 work experience student. Mai aspires to study fashion marketing at university, so I knew exactly who to contact!
We all learned so much – from marketing strategies in fashion and beauty to media planning and the latest visual creativity software, including Blender, Gemini AI, and Freepik, which are among the current favourites.
Zoe provided a fascinating overview of the fashion courses and their components. We explored the different tiers of influencers: Nano, Micro, Macro, and Mega, with the Mega tier being celebrities like Kim Kardashian! We discussed how to select an influencer for your fashion or retail brand, considering alignment with your values and budget. The landscape changes rapidly; a great influencer today, known for authentic and boutique content, could suddenly outgrow your brand.

Additionally, we delved into Zoe’s passion for sustainability in fashion. She shared details about her sustainable initiative, SoCoCo (Solent Conscious Collective) who have recently collaborated with Local Authority Fostering South East to create bags for foster children using repurposed denim. Zoe and her students produced over 120 bags, each with a unique design, sourcing offcuts from brands like Boden, as well as donations from family and friends. It was a superb project!
Thank you, Zoe! Can we have you back each week? 🙂
